| 1 | Meiofauna of the mangrove sediments in South Andaman A preliminary investigation was carried out on the composition, density and distribution of meiofauna in the mangrove sediments of South Andaman. Extremes of temperature and salinity in the habitat were experienced at low tide during summer and monsoon. The distribution of meiofauna largely followed the pattern characteristic of fine intertidal sediments. Maximum densities of the fauna were recorded upto 1840 individuals per 10 cm2. Nematodes were the dominant taxon at all depths comprising nearly 80% of the total fauna followed by copepods. Bulk of the fauna occurred in superficial layers of the sediment. Total populations were highest during summer. Copepods were restricted to the well humid surface layers and their populations dwindled sharply during monsoon. The role of meiofauna in the food cycle of mangrove ecosystem has been examined in light of the available information Source: Rao, G.C. J. Andaman Sci. Assoc.. 2(2); 1986; 23-32. 0391. | ||
| 2 | Fauna of conservation areas: A general account of the mangrove fauna of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India (Plants and Invertebrates) The mangrove fauna of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India was studied in detail during 1978-83. Both marine and terrestrial fauna of mangroves of the Bay Islands have been described. An account of mangrove borers and galls, faunal zonations in the mangroves and results of quantitative studies of some mangrove inhabiting crabs of South Andaman Islands are also described Source: Das, A.K.; Roy, M.K.D. 1989; 173; pp. 0494.
