| 1 | Studies on littoral flora of Andaman Islands Marine macrophytes of Andaman islands were qualitatively surveyed. In all 40 genera, 64 species of marine algae, 17 genera, 22 species of mangroves while 3 genera, 3 species of seagrasses are reported. There were 26 species of rhodophyta, 21 species of chlorophyta, 14 species of phaeophyta and 3 species of cyanophyta. The dominants were Acetabularia calyculus, Codium taitense. Halimeda species. Dictyosphaeria cavernosa, Padina pavonia, Pocockiella sp. Turbinaria species, Galaxaura species. The mangrove flora is dominated by Rhizophora apiculata, R. mucronata and Avicennia marina. Seagrasses Thalassia hemprichii and Halodule univervis were commonly observed in the infralittoral zone Source: Jagtap, T.G. | 2 | Marine algal flora of Goa The coast line of Goa (lat 14 degrees, a'-15 degrees, 52'N and long 73 degrees 38' - 74 degrees 24'E) with the length of 120 kms has been surveyed extensively for marine algae. Altogether 77 species of algae are collected from various places of Goa. A groupwise representation is as follows. Cyanophyceae -23, Phaeophyceae -22, Chlorophyceae -23 and Rhodophyceae 29. Habitats like intertidal, estuarine and subtidal regions are of algal interest. Intertidal region has been surveyed thoroughly. Porphyra, Gracilaria, Gelidium, Ulva, Sargassum are the economically important algae occur along this coast. Various seaweeds are analysed for their biochemical contents & bioactive substances Calcified algae (Articulated corallines and Padina) are studied for taxonomy, distribution, mineral content surface morphology, Phenology and biological associations. But crustose corallines are remained untouched. Dilophus sp. & Coeloseira indica and the estimate for the standing crop of algae is very less (27,00 tonnes yr-1). Mangrove environment of Goa supports a few algae with low standing crop and the dominant species are Enteromorpha, Caloglossa, Gracilaria verrucosa, Bostrychia etc. Available data on subtidal region is very scanty and is restricted to the depth 3-6m. Species of Padina, Stoechospermum, Sargassum and Amphiroa are common in this region. Overall, marine algal flora of Goa is `tropical'type and shows continuity with the West Coast of India and also with the submerged banks. Algal representation is very poor both qualitatively and quantitatively Source: Ambiye, V. Biodiversity of Goa. 1992; p.3. 0779. | ||
| 3 | Marine flora of Andaman and Nicobar group of Islands, Andaman Seas, India Marine microphytes form an important constituent of island ecosystem. Therefore the present study is an account of mangroves, seaweeds and seagrasses from Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Mangroves in Andaman are represented by 27 spp but Rhizophora mucronata Lamk and R. stylosa Griff forms the dominant vegetation. While anly 10 spp are recorded in Nicobar. Maximum of seven species of seagrasses were recorded from Katchal and Nancowry in Nicobar however only four species were recorded from Andaman. A total of 105 species of sea weeds have been recorded in Andaman and Nicobar islands Source: Jagtap, T.G. Andaman and Nicobar Islands: Challenges of developments. | 4 | Diversity of marine algae of Goa 120 Kms. long coasts line of Goa (Lat. 14 degrees, 9' - 15 degrees, 52'N and Long. 73 degrees 38' - 74 degrees 24'E) has been extensively surveyed for marine algae, and 80 species of algae were collected from various localities of Goa. A groupwise representation is as follows: Cyanophyceae - 4, Chlorophyceae - 24, Phaeophyceae - 23 and Rhodophyceae - 29. Habitats like intertidal estuarine and subtidal regions are algal interest. Intertidal region has been critically surveyed, which supports various agarophytes, alginophyte, edible and biologically active algae. Dillophus fasciola and Coeloseira indica are the new records from Goa. Mangrove environment of Goa supports a few algae with low standing crop and dominant species are Enteromorpha, Caloglossa, Rhizoclonium and Gracilaria verrucosa. Data available on the subtidal region is very scanty and is restricted upto the depth of 3 - 6 m. Species of Pandina, Stoechospermum, Sargassum and Amphiroa are common in this region. Overall, marien algal flora of Goa is of tropical type exhibits continuity with the West coast of India had also with the submerged banks. Algal representation is qualitatively rich but quantitatively poor (i.e. 27, 000 tonnes/year) Source: Kerkar, V. 10th Annual Congress on Man and Environment. 1995; 53-54. 0928.
