| 1 | Survey of mangrove clam (Geloina proxima) fishery in Ratnagiri district Survey of Geloina proxima fishery was undertaken with a view to evaluate the present status of mangrove clam fishery in Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra, India and suggesting possible ways and means of improving the fishery. Considering the salient features of the mangrove clam fishery in different taluka places in Ratnagiri district, the following significant findings are listed: (1) The district has about 167 Kms. coastal line which includes about 30 small and big creeks. (2) The brackish water area which supports mangrove vegetation is about 2,383.85 hect. sup (2) distributed in nine talukas. (3) The maximum area of mangrove vegetation is under the jurisdiction of Rajapur taluka, that is, about 510.49 hect. sup(2) and minimum in the jurisdiction of Sangmeshwar Taluka, that is about 13.88 hect. sup(2). (4) The ranking of the talukas is made by considering estimated catch in Kgs. lyr. and approximate value there of in rupees. Ratnagiri taluka stands first in the mangrove clam fishery of the district, Rajapur Taluka second, Mandangad Taluka third. Chiplun, Dapoli, Guhagar, Khed.
