1Mangrove associated cyanobacterial species in Muthupet estuary
A survey on cyanobacterial association with mangrove plants in Muthupet Estuary, Tamil Nadu, India has been carried out during the month of December 2000. In the estuary, plants such as @iAvicennia marina, Excoecaria agallocha, Sueda maritima, Aegiceras corniculatum@@ and @iAcanthus illcifolius@@ are very predominant. Many cyanobacterial species associated with the aerial roots of the mangrove plants were collected and identified. Totally, 17 cyanobacterial strains were recorded in association with the mangrove vegetation. Among cyanobacteria, @iOscillatoria@@ sp was predominant in its population. Interestingly, the mangrove plant @iAvicennia marina@@ harboured a maximum species diversity of cyanobacteria than other plants.
